WELLFLEET – The weather may have played a factor, but enough voters in Wellfleet turned out for business to be conducted during a special town meeting at Wellfleet Elementary School Tuesday night; and brought a project to revamp the town’s aging police station one step closer to fruition.

Voters approved the $7.5 million debt exclusion project to overhaul the existing police station, and will include structural improvements, bringing the building up to state and federal code, and allow departmental operations to run at optimum capacity.

A short presentation before the vote highlighted that while the project will increase real estate taxes by roughly $119 annually, if action was not taken, costs to do the project would only increase with time.

“It’s always getting more and more expensive to build,” said Wellfleet Police Chief Ron Fisette. “It’s never going to be cheaper than it is today, it will continue to grow as we go on, so I think it’s important to take care of it.”

The project still needs final approval through the town’s election, which is being held today from noon-7 p.m at the Wellfleet Senior Center.

If passed, the police department will be housed in a temporary facility during constructed which is expected to begin in early 2017, and completed by September 2018.

Residents also approved money to fund the town’s housing rental assistance program, funding for a survey of several town beaches, and a solar net metering credit.
