WOODS HOLE – County officials say mosquitoes in Bourne and Woods Hole tested positive for West Nile Virus this past week.
A batch of mosquitoes came back positive for the virus in Woods Hole on August 29. A second batch trapped in Bourne on the same day also tested positive.
This is the second positive test for West Nile in Bourne this year. The virus was also detected in Barnstable earlier this summer.
Entomologist Gabrielle Sakolsky, Assistant Superintendent of the Barnstable County Cape Cod Mosquito Control Project, said homeowners should make sure to drain standing water that may have accumulated on their property.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention the virus is spread through mosquito bites but is difficult to detect.
Most people do not show any symptoms but some develop a fever and other symptoms that could turn serious and may be fatal.
Officials ask that people wear protective clothing and use proper insect repellent.
