Whale Week Returns to Provincetown

whalePROVINCETOWN – The 5th Annual Whale Week will begin in Provincetown on July 26 at the Province Lands Visitor Center.

The week is designed for families to celebrate the ocean and proceeds benefit the Center for Coastal Studies.

Whale Week 2015 will kick off with a 5K Race through the Province Lands trails, starting at 8 a.m. with registration from 7 to 7:45 p.m.

On Monday, July 27, at 11 a.m., visitors will be able to step inside a life-size inflatable right whale to learn about the rare animals.

Also on Monday, a Homemade Boat Race will take place on the beach behind Whalers Wharf starting at 5 p.m.

Tuesday will allow visitors to become junior marine biologists, collecting tiny marine creatures to observe under microscopes. This program starts at 9:30 a.m. at 333R Commercial Street, Provincetown. A repeat of the program at the same time will take place Thursday, July 30.

At 3 p.m. Tuesday, naturalist from the Center for Coastal Studies will lead an exploration of the West End tidal flats.

The Whale Week Amazing Race scavenger hunt will take place Wednesday at 10 a.m. Participants will find items around Provincetown’s most notable landmarks. Registration will be located at the Macmillan Pier.

A guided hike out to the gray seal haul-out at High Head will take place at 3 p.m. the same day. Another chance to check out the seals will start at 4 p.m. Thursday.

“The Whales of Cape Cod” presentation by Jesse Mechling will start at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 30 at the Province Lands Visitor Center.

Whale Week will wrap-up on Friday, July 31 at 10 a.m. with marine-themed games, competitions, arts and crafts at the Bas Relief Park on Bradford Street.
