WHOI Disputes Journal report

WOODS HOLE  – The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is pushing back against a story in Monday’s Wall Street Journal that reported the Institution had been the victim of a hacking attack that saw its computer systems compromised.

In a statement, officials from WHOI say that in spite of the Journal’s report they have seen no evidence of any significant breach since the implementation of a robust cyber security system in 2015.

WHOI also says the report on which the journal predicated its story has not been made public making an assessment of its validity not possible at this time.

The Institution also says it maintains a robust security system in consultation with a nationwide leading computer security firm.

The paper said that at least 27 universities and research institutions, including MIT and WHOI, had been compromised by Chinese hackers looking for information on maritime projects that could have possible military applications.
