WOODS HOLE – A scientist with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution has been recognized for her research.
Andone Lavery, an associate scientist with tenure in WHOI’s Applied Ocean Physics & Engineering Department has been selected by the Oceanography Society as the 2017 recipient of the Walter Munk Award for Distinguished Research in Oceanography Related to Sound and the Sea.
According to the citation that will be included on the certificate, Lavery’s work focuses on using broadband acoustic measurement methods and models to compare the scattering of zooplankton and physical microstructures, which has led to a new understanding of both ocean physical processes and marine biology.
Lavery was nominated for the award by one of her colleagues, who referred to her work as “very much in the spirit of acoustical oceanography and the Walter Munk Award’s stated criteria for acoustics, ocean science, and instrumentation development.”
Lavery will receive the Munk Award during the 174th Meeting of the Acoustical Society of America in New Orleans, Louisiana this December, and she will also be recognized during the Ocean Sciences Meeting in Portland, Oregon in February. She will give presentations at both meetings.
