WOODS HOLE – The Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation has selected a Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) biochemist as one of eight 2016 Postdoctoral Program fellows.
Saito will be awarded 120,000 dollars over two years to study the nutritional requirements of marine microbes, particularly the metals needed for protein synthesis.
According to Saito, metals are an essential component in biogeochemical reactions and their scarcity in seawater can have a profound effect on major natural cycles.
Saito has already developed methods for understanding nutrient and microbial interactions using a branch of biochemistry which studies the thousands of proteins encoded in the genome.
Now, he’ll be able to bring in an assistant researcher to help streamline those efforts.
The Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation was founded in 1946 to advance the science of chemistry and advance human relations worldwide.
