Whole Foods Community Giving Day to Boost Relief for Shellfishermen

HYANNIS – Wellfleet Shellfish Promotion and Tasting’s Shellfishermen Relief Fund will be getting a boost today from customers at local Whole Food Markets.

The supermarket chain will hold a Community Giving Day, known as “5% day” at six locations, including Hyannis.

Five percent of all sales during the day will be donated to Wellfleet SPAT.

Other participating Whole Foods locations are in Andover, Bedford, Dedham, Hingham, Hyannis and South Weymouth.

The relief fund was started to help shellfishermen after a Norovirus outbreak in October closed beds in Wellfleet harbor for a month.

The fund was started at OysterFest just after the closure and guests raised over $5,000.

Wellfleet SPAT added $10,000 to the fund bringing its total to over $15,000.

Applications for relief funding are now available for shellfishermen affected by the shutdown.

Applications for relief funding are available at WellfleetSPAT.org.
