The store’s grand opening is Wednesday, March 14 with a “bread-breaking,” the Whole Foods version of a ribbon-cutting at 9:45am.

State Senator Dan Wolf will be speaking at the store opening.

The 28,000-square-foot store is in the former Borders Bookstore building on Route 132 in the Southwind Plaza in Hyannis.

As customers were given tours around the store yesterday, staffers were stocking shelves, cleaning and getting the store ready for the first customers.

The sneak peak, in which group tours were given every 15 minutes all day until 6 pm, was promoted through the store’s Facebook page.

Whole Foods spokeswoman Heather McCready said 125 team members have been hired to work at the Whole Foods Hyannis store. Typically about 70 percent of the staff at a Whole Foods is full-time and the remaining are part-time, although she was not sure if that was the percentage at the Hyannis store.

Whole Foods designates full-time as 30 hours per week and for that number of hours, workers receive full benefits, she said.

Staffers at the store were bustling around at different stations. In the produce department, a staffer cuts fresh vegetables to make guacamole, salsa, and other preparations. In the bulk packaging area, a staffer was grinding almonds to make almond butter, a variant on peanut butter.

The store has a resident illustrator who works on the in-store signage. A special “Hyannis” font has been developed and is used on signage throughout the store.

wholefoods09The store stocks local products from more than 30 Cape Cod businesses, including Coonamessett Farm in Falmouth, Four Seas Ice Cream in Centerville, The Farm in Orleans, and Pain D’Avignon in Hyannis. The store is also working with the Cape Cod Commercial Fisherman’s Alliance to supply fresh fish for the store.
