WEST YARMOUTH – Due to high demand during the holiday season last year the Whydah Pirate Museum in West Yarmouth is extending its hours between Christmas and New Year’s Day.
The museum will be open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and New Year’s Day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The family-friendly attraction features an authentic 300-year-old pirate treasure from the vessel Whydah which sank off the coast of Wellfleet in 1717.
During the holiday week, the museum will feature special activities in the Sea Lab and Learning Center where visitors can interact with conservators as they work to preserve real artifacts discovered while diving the shipwreck.
The Whydah was an 18th Century slave ship captured by pirates, who seized 53 other vessels and their treasures.
A nor’easter sank the ship off Cape Cod and took the lives of the majority of its 146-man crew.
Explorer Barry Clifford and a team of divers discovered the wreck in 1985 and has since preserved the treasure, pistols, cannons and other artifacts recovered from the wreck site.
