HYANNIS – The presence of wild turkeys displaying aggressive behavior is becoming increasingly more common both locally and throughout the state in residential areas.
State wildlife officials are offering tips to minimize aggressive interactions between wild turkeys and humans or pets.
This aggressive behavior is heightened between March and May, which is breeding season for wild turkeys and includes pecking, or displaying other intimidating actions toward people.
The tips say avoid feeding turkeys intentional or not and be aware of bird feeders which may inadvertently attract wild turkeys if seeds fall to the ground.
People may also scare off turkeys with loud noises or water sprayed from a hose. Mylar tape, balloons, or pinwheels can also be used to fend off the birds although the results may vary.
