SANDWICH – A weeping willow tree in Sandwich estimated to be between 50 to 100 years old will be removed after selectmen determined in a unanimous vote Thursday night to cut it down, saying it was causing significant damage in the area.

Many residents argued against the idea but Selectmen determined the damage to the lower Shawme Dam and a nearby fish ladder warranted its removal. Selectman Frank Pannorfi says he understands the argument to keep it but expenses were adding up.

” I didn’t realize until last night that we had to go in and cut the roots that were growing toward the fish ladder.”

Panorfi also said that the town was in violation of federal dam requirements because of damage by the tree.

Selectmen said they would put the job out to bid and the work is expected to be completed this year.
