Willowbend Seeking to Build Additional Housing Units

MASHPEE – The Willowbend Country Club is looking to move forward with a project to increase the number of housing units on the sprawling property.

The proposed project consists of 11 buildings with 22 total units, a pool area and parking lot.

While proposing additional units, there is still a large amount of open space, which was decreed by a special permit issued in the mid-1980s.

“The remaining project is 327 acres, of that 180 acres is dedicated open space, which is approximately double which was required under the 1985 zoning,” said Willowbend attorney John McElhinney.

Mashpee’s planning board does have some concerns regarding the project, specifically a retaining wall that would be as high as 12 feet in some places, as well as the possible impacts on natural and historical resources in the area.

Addressing the wastewater issue, McElhinney said it could be accommodated by their system.

“There is adequate capacity for that. DEP has already looked at this preliminarily and agreed that we can make that connection,” he said.

The board will revisit the project in early September.
