BARNSTABLE – The Wings of Freedom Tour is returning to Cape Cod Monday, bringing World War II era fighter planes and bombers to Barnstable Municipal Airport in Hyannis.
The tour, sponsored by the Collings Foundation, features a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bomber, North American B-25 Mitchell, Consolidated B-24 Liberator heavy bomber and a P-51 Mustang fighter, which the public is welcome to tour, touch, and even take a ride in for a fee.
The B-17 is one of only eight in flying condition in the country, while the B-24 and P-51C are the sole remaining examples still flying.
“This gives people an interesting perspective of what it must have been like for a young army air corps members during World War II. That’s what we strive to do,” said Hunter Chaney, the Director of Marketing for the Wings of Freedom Tour.
The Wings of Freedom Tour will arrive at Barnstable Municipal Airport at noon next Monday and will stay through Wednesday.
Tour hours are from 12 through 5 p.m. on Monday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday.
“These are flying interactive memorials for our World War II veterans,” Chaney added.
Admission is just $15, $5 for children under 12 years old, and WWII Veterans may tour the aircraft at no cost. Prices for 30 minute flights varying depending on the aircraft.
