Wings of Freedom Tour Makes Cape Cod Stop This Weekend

HYANNIS – Four World War II aircraft flew into Barnstable Municipal Airport on Friday as the Wings of Freedom Tour makes its annual Cape Cod stop as part of a 110 city nationwide tour.

A B-17 Flying Fortress, B-24 Liberator, B-25 Mitchell bomber and P-51 Mustang fighter are on display until Sunday at the airport.

The B-17 is one of only eight in flying condition in the country and the B-25 is best known for being used in the Doolittle raid.

“If you go inside them and take a look around, you can see what these aviators did and the primitive conditions that they had and what they did over Europe and the far east is just amazing,” said Airport Manager Bud Breault.

The Collins Foundation, which organizes the tour, is a 501c3 non-profit educational foundation devoted to organizing “living history” events.

The Wings of Freedom Tour is celebrating its 28th year, with tens of millions of people seeing the aircraft on display in over 35 states annually.

“We’re seeing them alive here, living by flying, people being able to get on them, experience what it was that our airmen experienced during the World War,” said Joe Hoppell, a volunteer with the Collins Foundation.

The Tour is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for children under 12.

Visitors can also experience a 30 minute flight aboard the rare aircraft.
