HYANNIS – The town of Barnstable is enhancing the experience at the Hyannis Village Green for residents and visitors with a remotely operated music system.

Arts and Culture Coordinator Melissa Hersh spearheaded the idea after stumbling upon a similar set up in the New Jersey town where he parents live.

The music is piped wirelessly to speakers at the bandstand from about 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day.

“Without even people realizing, it provides this nice background to encourage spending more time on the green,” Hersh said.

Hersh said the town is always looking to enhance the compliment the experience of visitors in the Hyannis Cultural District.

“I’m really excited about it,” she said. “I’d love to see it all around town.”

Hersh said she has received positive feedback from visitors and workers in the area.

“You see everything from people picnicking and relaxing, cartwheels, kids playing wiffle ball and just sitting and taking in the view and the experience,” Hersh said. “And that is what this music is doing – just continuing that relaxing, positive, uplifting atmosphere without anyone realizing that’s what’s happening.”

Hersh said the music is also intended to help other organizations that use the Village Green including the Hyannis Main Street Business Improvement District, the Hyannis Chamber of Commerce.

“You can hear it from anywhere on the green,” she said.

Hersh hopes to expand the use of the system to Bismore Park and the Artist Shanties.
