SOUTH DENNIS – Students at the Nathaniel H. Wixon Innovation School in South Dennis will finally have a playground to play on at recess beginning today.
The school held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new playground Monday afternoon.
Principal Sean Owen said students have been asking when they can play on the playground since school started.
“To have a new playground here is going to be a huge difference for our children,” Owen said. “They really deserve it.”
Volunteers from the community helped employees from M.E. O’Brien & Sons, Inc. to build the playground in August.
“It was really something special because they all came out together and we worked hard all day long,” Owen said. “It was hard work and we actually built this playground.”
The ribbon was cut by fifth grade student Samantha Goode, who also read an essay she wrote about the new playground.
“Not having a playground for the last year has been pretty hard,” she said. “One reason why it has been hard is because unless you want to play football, soccer or some other game there is really not much to do. That is why this playground means so much to the student body here at Wixon Innovation School.”
The ceremony included performances by the school’s jazz band and choir.
Owen said the total cost of the playground was around $180,000.
The facility is in its fourth year as an innovation school and houses approximately 500 fourth and fifth grade students.
