BOSTON (AP) — For all its liberal pretensions, Massachusetts hasn’t always been the most progressive of states when it comes to electing women to political office.
That’s changing.
On Tuesday, Massachusetts voters elected four women to the state’s 11-member congressional delegation — Sen. Elizabeth Warren. Rep. Katherine Clark and incoming representatives Ayanna Pressley and Lori Trahan.
At the same time, voters elected twice as many women as men to statewide offices on Beacon Hill, including Attorney General Maura Healey, Treasurer Deb Goldberg and Auditor Suzanne Bump — all Democrats — and Republican Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito.
Not so long ago women in high political office were a relative rarity in Massachusetts.
Just a decade ago, there was just one woman holding statewide office and one woman in the state’s then 12-member congressional delegation.
