Woods Hole Research Center Monitoring Coonamessett River Nitrogen Levels

FALMOUTH – The Falmouth Conservation Commission is in the midst of a project along a portion of the Coonamessett River which aims to lower nitrogen levels in a local watershed.

The Woods Hole Research Center and the Unites States Department of Agriculture (USDA) are collaborating in a study to determine what impacts the conservation project is having on nitrogen levels.

The portion of the river that’s being study flows through three abandoned cranberry bogs dubbed Upper, Middle and Lower bogs, and according to baseline samples taken in August, there is significant nitrogen levels in Middle Bog and flowing into Lower Bog.

The study involves a series of strategically placed wells which will provide further data.

“Three wells along transects parallel to ground water flow on either side of Lower Bog and then one-time sampling of groundwater from those wells as well as the stream bed,” said Casey Kennedy, Hydrologist with the USDA.

The next samples will be taken in April, which will coincide with the conclusion of the restoration project.
