Woods Hole Researchers Testing New Tool for Ocean Exploration

WOODS HOLE – Woods Hole researchers are testing a new acoustic, optic, oceanographic and biological sampling system.

The Deep-See instrument platform is a joint project between the Northeast Fisheries Science Center and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

The 20-foot long and 2,000 pound platform carries a variety of instruments and sensors that will collect data at an unprecedented rate and send real-time information back to the surface.

The system was taken out for testing on NOAA’s Henry B. Bigelow from Newport, Rhode Island on August 11.
