TRURO – Construction is underway on three affordable homes for local families on Route 6 in Truro.
All three are designed to be energy-efficient and have solar panels that generate electricity.
One home will have one bedroom, another will have two bedrooms and the third will have three bedrooms.
Habitat for Humanity is currently conducting site work which includes building foundations for the homes and pouring concrete cellar floors.
Wall and roof construction is expected to start this fall.
“Now we’re in a very active stage of letting the community know about it so that those who might like to volunteer will put it in their plans for the fall and through the winter,” said Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod Executive Director Vikki Goldsmith.
The future homeowners and a team of Habitat volunteers will help them construct their own homes, which are expected to be occupied in 2018.
The homes sit on over an acre of land purchased with a grant from the Town of Truro Community Preservation Act Funds, approved by Town Meeting voters.
Community events will be scheduled in the coming weeks to provide more information and enlist additional support for the construction.
“It’s rare to be able to support an affordable housing initiative in the outer Cape, though we are really trying to bring in the contributions, which are what helps us keep each of our homes affordable,” said Goldsmith.
Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod has built more than 115 affordable homes in all 15 towns on the Cape.
Wall raisings for new affordable homes in Brewster and Truro are scheduled of late this summer and fall.
