Work Progressing on Sandwich Public Safety Complex

SANDWICH – Construction crews will continue working on the new public safety complex in Sandwich throughout the winter months.

A series of storms and cold weather this year had pushed back the targeted date of completion for the 27-acre public safety campus, with crews working Saturday shifts to get back on schedule.

The company will be able to continue to work through the cold New England winter as the focus of the project shifts to the living and working quarters inside new police and fire stations.

Sandwich Town Manager Bud Dunham says that the project is “going very well.”

“The general contractor, Boston Building & Bridge, is working hard to get both buildings complete. I’d say the police station is a little further along, but the hope is to have both buildings weather-tight soon so they can make a lot of progress through the winter with the ultimate goal of occupying the buildings by late spring or early summer next year.”

Dunham says that the police and fire stations, originally built in the mid-50’s and mid-70’s, have been in “tough shape” for a long time.

“They were obviously built when the town had a much smaller population, not only in terms of residents but also the number of employees working out of those buildings. I think it’s going to be a massive upgrade for everyone once it opens and I think it will provide a massive service to the public,” he said.

The new police station will house all emergency communications equipment and staff, prisoner detention cells, evidence processing rooms, interview rooms, and the town’s emergency disaster management services. The building will also be installed with the latest communications, camera, and IT technology.

“A lot of what we’ve been spending time on and trying to button up is exactly how many different connections go in each room and all the different security systems, especially where you’re required to have a local correctional area that needs to be separated from the normal business, so a lot of new technologies are definitely being incorporated,” Dunham added.

The complex is also expected to feature a new skate park and recreation area, while plans for a senior center to be built in the future are also rumored.
