Town Neck Re-nourishment Project in Sandwich Underway

SANDWICH – Work is underway on the re-nourishment of Town Neck Beach in Sandwich.

Crews poured the first loads of sand dredged from the Cape Cod Canal onto the beach Monday morning.

Sandwich Natural Resources Director Mark Galkowski was happy to see the project started.

“You knew it was going to come, I mean there’s been some false starts,” said Galkowski. “It takes a while to get things set up to do the work. There was a few issues with setting the pipe and so on. Once it gets going, it will get going. They’ll be working 24 hours a day.”

The dredge, which made its way to the Cape from Virginia last week, was able to get three loads of sand onto the beach Monday before the high winds made it too rough to continue.

Crews are expected to continue today under better weather conditions.

As much as 180,000 cubic yards of sand will be dumped onto the beach in the next three to four weeks, which will be shaped and sculpted into dunes.

“They’ll build the project from the west to the east, the way they have it laid out right now,” said Galkowski. “They’ll get the sand in place and then start needing the grades.”

The $2.9 million project is being funded by town funds and $1 million in state money.
