World-Record Lottery Prize Up for Grabs With Mega Millions Drawing

HYANNIS – There’s still time to become a billionaire in Tuesday night’s Mega Millions Jackpot.

Massachusetts Lottery officials said the payout has exploded to a world-record $1.6 billion.

The cash option on the prize is an estimated $904.9 million.

“This could very well be the most exciting week ever for our customers and our retail partners and we remind everyone to keep the experience of playing the lottery enjoyable by playing responsibly,” said Michael Sweeney, Executive Director of the Massachusetts State Lottery.

Meanwhile, the Powerball jackpot for the Wednesday, October 24 drawing is an estimated $620 million, the third-largest Powerball jackpot and the sixth-largest U.S. lottery jackpot ever.

The cash option on that prize is an estimated $354.3 million.

Tuesday night’s Mega Millions drawing will be the 26th since the jackpot was last hit July 24, when a $543 million jackpot was won by a group of 11 co-workers on a ticket sold in California.

Wednesday night’s Powerball drawing will be the 21st since the jackpot was last hit August 11, when a $245.6 million jackpot was won on a ticket sold in New York.

The $620 million jackpot is the game’s largest since August 23, 2017, when a ticket sold in Chicopee, MA was the lone winner of a $758.7 million jackpot, the largest jackpot ever won on a single ticket in U.S. lottery history.

Tuesday’s $1.6 billion Mega Millions jackpot surpasses the $1.586 billion Powerball jackpot from January 13, 2016.  Tickets sold in California, Florida and Tennessee each won a share of that record-setting jackpot.

Mega Millions tickets are $2 each and can be played in 44 states, Washington D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Tickets for Tuesday’s drawing can be purchased until 10:45 p.m. Tuesday at Massachusetts Lottery retailers throughout the state.
