HYANNIS –  Planes that helped win World War II flew into the Barnstable Municipal Airport Monday afternoon for a three-day stay on Cape Cod.

The Wings of Freedom Tour includes a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress “Nine O Nine” Heavy Bomber, the North American B-25 Mitchell “Tondelayo,” a Consolidated B-24 Liberator “Witchcraft” Heavy Bomber and Mustang fighter.

The planes are operated by the Collings Foundation, a non-profit educational foundation devoted to preserving the aircraft as a living history exhibit.

“When you see these aircraft, you think of the size of these things and what they did, it’s magnificent, because they’re not that big, in reality. To think they conquered Europe,” said Barnstable Municipal Airport Manager Bud Breault.

The B-17 is one of only 9 in flying condition in the United States, while the B-24 is the only remaining example of its type flying in the world.

The planes are on display through Wednesday morning for viewing. Tickets for adults are $12 and $6 for children under 12. World War II veterans can tour the area at no cost.

30-minute flights are also available for a fee.

  1. The ride on the B-17 is expensive, but well worth it!! I took a ride back in 2007, and was fascinated how these planes fly!! I may take another flight this year, now that I have better camera’s 🙂
