YARMOUTH – A reunion for veterans of the Naval Destroyer U.S.S. Abbot was held on Cape Cod over the weekend, about 75 people attended, including 3 World War II vets and the widow of another WW II vet.
The Abbot was a WW II era ship, it saw action in the Pacific and after the war was stationed in Newport. The reunion group hold bi annual events and while on Cape visited Mass Maritime and the PAVE PAWS radar installation.
They also participated in a clam bake and were joined by Representative Tim Whelan, Chief Frank Frederickson and Deputy Chief Stephan Xiarhos of the Yarmouth Police Department at the clam bake at the Moose Lodge. At their last meeting, Yarmouth Selectmen proclaimed a U.S.S. Abbot day.
The veterans were hosted by the Hampton Inn in West Yarmouth, where they stayed for the duration of the visit.
The Abbot was eventually sold by the Navy and scrapped in August of 1975.
