YARMOUTH – In just his first year as the Assistant-Harbormaster in Yarmouth, Tucker “Jack” Tierney is being honored for saving a drowning victim back in August.

Tierney was honored in late August for the action he took to not only save the drowning victim, but also kept the young man calm throughout the process.

Yarmouth Natural Resource Director Karl Von Hone says that on August 10 at approximately 12:30 p.m., a call came over the radio that there was a potential drowning victim located somewhere in the eastern end of Lewis Bay. He says that Tierney immediately responded to the scene and upon arrival, noticed somebody pointing to a breakwater where a young man had nearly drowned.

“Jack pulled the boat up to the breakwater, calmly convinced the near drowning victim to get on board the patrol boat so he’d be able to transport him to a nearby dock where fire-rescue could render aid,” Von Hone explained. Jack at that point was in radio communication with the fire department, advising them of a more specific location for rescue to get to.”

Von Hone says that Tierney also put a lifejacket on the victim while also keeping him calm after the traumatic experience.

“As you would think, the young victim was very nervous about going anywhere near the water again. Jack calmly convinced him to come on board and put on a PFD (Personal Flotation Device) while he was on the breakwater,” said Von Hone.

Tierney then transported the victim to a nearby dock where Yarmouth Fire Personnel treated him before transporting to Cape Cod Hospital for advanced medical treatment. The young man was later taken to Boston Children’s Hospital for additional care. Von Hone says the victim has been released and is recovered.

“I’m thrilled with Jack’s participation in this call. Jack is a young man. This is his first year he is with us. We provide as much training as possible to new hires, which ranges from first responders, first aid, to CPR and then emergency boat operations,” said Von Hone. “I cannot say enough about Jack. He is mature beyond his years and I think he has a very bright future in whatever endeavor he chooses to do. I hope we have him for a long time to come.
