YARMOUTH – The Town of Yarmouth recognized Deputy Police Chief Steven Xiarhos on Tuesday night for his 40 years of service to the department.
The Select Board issued a proclamation to Xiarhos, after he announced that he will be retiring from the Yarmouth Police Department on December 8.
“Deputy Chief Xiarhos was a champion of the community with his continued support of the members of the community and military members,” said Select Board Chair Michael Stone. “The Board of Selectmen are extremely grateful and officially recognize Steven G. Xiarhos for his career dedication to benefit the residents in the Town of Yarmouth.”
The Deputy Police Chief also had a chance to address the Select Board and the public on the retirement announcement, which was made earlier in the day.
“How do you leave a job and the people that you love? It’s very bittersweet,” said Xiarhos. “I love being a police officer and it’s an exciting time to look back and look forward.
He submitted paperwork last month to run for the 5th Barnstable State Representative District, but is expected to make a formal announcement after his retirement.
Yarmouth Police Chief Frank Frederickson attended the proclamation and gave his support to Xiarhos at the meeting.
Both had celebrated their 40th anniversary with Yarmouth Police in September.
Moving forward, Xiarhos said that he’ll never forget how much the town means to him.
“Everybody in this community I want you to all know, wherever I go, my heart will always be in Yarmouth,” said Xiarhos.
