Yarmouth Launches New Recycling Rules

YARMOUTH-  With new recycling changes headed to Yarmouth, officials from the Public Works Department will hold public information sessions to fill in residents of the policies.

“For example we have co-mingled recyclables over at the Yarmouth Disposal Area and if we’re able to pull some metal items out of there, or even cardboard items out of there, and put them in a source separated arrangement that we’ve had for a number of years… in their own bin, we can then get money for the metal, or for cardboard,” said Jeff Colby, Yarmouth DPW Director.

These latest changes come after stricter regulations set in China where most of the materials are packaged and sold to.

“One of the efforts, and it’s a big effort that we are pushing for and we’ll be sending a lot of information out about that is actually cleaning out our newspaper stream,” Colby said.

For many years we’ve had a newspaper container, separate from our co-mingled recycle container, and what people tend to do is put other products other than newspapers in there, thinking that it makes sense with that stream.”

This issue has caused these mixed paper products to be labeled as ‘contaminated’, thus leading to issues with the town’s revenue flow gained by selling off the materials.

New signs have been ordered by the town to inform residents about how and why certain paper products and other recyclables should be separated, and should be posted soon.

A meeting on June 16th at the West Yarmouth Library and additional meetings on June 17th, Aug. 15th, and September 12th at the South Yarmouth Library will be held to break down the new regulations. All meetings will open at 3p.m.

The town says it doesn’t want these rules to discourage people from trying to recycle, they just want to keep them well-informed so the process can run as smoothly as possible.
