YARMOUTH – A South Yarmouth man was arrested early Saturday morning and faces a number of charges after he allegedly assaulted two police officers.

Michael P. Gomes, 30, was driving a 2013 Toyota Corolla when he was stopped by police for speeding on Winslow Gray Road near Buck Island Road at 12:33 a.m.

According to Deputy Police Chief Steven Xiarhos, officers smelled alcohol on Gomes, who argued with police and refused to exit the vehicle.

Xiarhos said Gomes failed a field sobriety test and pushed two officers when they attempted to place him under arrest.

Gomes also allegedly kicked one of the officers in the shin during the struggle.

Police finally subdued Gomes and he was taken to the Yarmouth Police Department where he refused a breathalyzer test.

Along with assault and battery on a police officer, he was charged with operating under the influence of alcohol, operating a motor vehicle negligently, marked lanes violation, and resisting arrest.
