YARMOUTH – Selectmen in Yarmouth are discussing attempts to update the Dennis-Yarmouth Regional School District agreement.
After a second straight year of the town passing a Proposition 2 1/2 override to fund its portion of the school budget, officials are seeking what they consider a more fair way to split costs other than enrollment.
One of the topics included how the composition of the school committee is determined, as Dennis officials are worried about Yarmouth having a super majority on the committee.
“If they are willing to step up on the cost issues, especially on capital, then certainly they’d earn that type of representation,” said Yarmouth Selectman Norm Holcomb.
Yarmouth is proposing a split on the school committee based on student enrolment from each town.
As agreement talks have stalled between the towns, the Yarmouth board is working to send an amended version of the agreement directly to the school committee.
The school committee has the power to send the document before voters of both towns.
Yarmouth is also proposing a 50/50 split of administrative costs for the system not impacted by enrollment.
Discussions also continue on deciding how the funding will be handled for a new regional middle school.
Dennis is seeking construction costs to be based on school enrollment at the time the school is bonded.
Current enrolment figures are 68.2 percent for Yarmouth and 31.8 for Dennis.
Yarmouth officials believe the costs of shared spaces in the school should be divided equally.
