Yarmouth Parks Plan Revised

YARMOUTH – The development plans for three parks in Yarmouth have been revised and were presented to selectmen at a recent meeting.

The revisions include the addition of a children’s splash park, and an artificial turf field.  it also now has twenty courts for an up and coming sport that caught Pat Armstrong, the Parks and Recreation Director, by surprise, and prompted a big cheer from the dozens of players in attendance when she brought it up to the selectmen.  “We found this one sport called Pikleball.  Everyone who’s here for Pickleball raise your hands.  They’ve been waiting to talk to you.”

The parks are the Flax Pond and Sandy Pond Recreation Areas, along with Peter Homer Park.

Aside from the children’s splash park, the Sandy Park Recreation Area will get Americans with Disabilities Act compliant play structures, ten tennis courts, half of which can be turned into Pickleball courts, restrooms, a wildflower space with structures for shade, and a parking lot with room for 166 vehicles.  Twelve more Pickleball courts will be added to the Flax Pond Recreation Area.

Some of the many changes to the plan are due to the increased use of town fields by local athletic teams.

Armstrong told the board that the cost of the plan is already covered.  “The master plan as presented to you has been paid for through the community preservation grant.  We’re not looking for additional funding at this point.”

The building costs are estimated to be between 5.5 and 7 million dollars.
