YARMOUTH – The Yarmouth Police Department will be coordinating with the Drug Enforcement Administration for a take-back initiative event on October 26.
The event is a part of the 18th one-day effort to remove potentially dangerous prescription drugs and controlled substances from homes across the country.
Expired, unused, or unwanted controlled substances pose a risk to public safety in the United States. Prescription drug abuse and overdoses in the country have been dangerously high for a number of years.
Improper disposal of the drugs, such as flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash, can lead to additional safety and health hazards.
The initiative began in 2010. Since then, over one million pounds of pharmaceutical waste has been collected, destroyed, and converted.
Pills, medications, and other unused pharmaceuticals can be brought to the Yarmouth Police Headquarters on Brad Erickson Way from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Participants will be anonymous, and the substances will be collected with no questions asked.
