Yarmouth Police Foundation to Fund K9 Patrol Camera System

YARMOUTH – The Yarmouth Police Department is purchasing new technology in an effort to keep their officers and the community safe.

After the tragic death of Sgt. Sean Gannon last month, the Yarmouth Police Foundation is funding a $22,000 camera system for K9 patrol units.

Gannon was shot and killed while serving an arrest warrant at a home in Marstons Mills on April 12. His K9 partner Nero was also shot and is recovering.

“Something like this would give us kind of the eyes and ears of that dog that’s going through a wooded lot, an attic or a basement,” said Yarmouth Deputy Police Chief Steven Xiarhos.

“We can actually see and hear from a safe position what is happening.”

The camera is similar to a GoPro, but more high tech and can operate in daylight, at night, and all different weather conditions.

“It would be very powerful and safety oriented to protect the police officers, the dog and the community from dangerous situations,” Xiarhos said.

Xiarhos said residents can help the department through donations to the Yarmouth Police Foundation.

Gannon had researched the system before he was shot and killed.

“The town of Yarmouth fully supports and commits thousands of dollars every year to us as police officers, but it is limited,” Xiarhos said.

Xiarhos said officers should be fully trained, the department should be fully staffed and officers should have all the equipment that they need.

“It’s not only to protect ourselves, but it’s really protecting the citizens of our community,” he said.

Donations can be made at yarmouthpolicefoundation.org.

“It’s nothing to do with paying police officers or anything like that,” Xiarhos said. “It’s really for equipment which is additional to the standard equipment that we have. So many people want to help and this is one way to do it.”
