Yarmouth Police Try Once Again For Formal Accreditation

YARMOUTH – The Yarmouth Police department is once again attempting to get formal accreditation.

During a recent meeting of the board of selectmen, Chief Frank Frederickson explained that this has been sought for quite some time.

“It is something that the department has tried to do for the past three chiefs, and it’s my goal to attain that during my tenure,” he said

It will cost the town $1250 per year, but half of that will be re-reimbursed.  Once achieved, the town could see some cost-saving.

Lt. Andrew O’Malley gave a brief overview of what the accreditation will mean.

“It provides a norm for an agency to judge its performance.  It provides a basis to correct deficiencies before they become public problems and allows the department to implement industry best practices.  It’s basically allowing us to get to the industry norm.”

It will address many issues such as failure to train and negligent hiring.

The proposal was given unanimous approval by the board.
