YARMOUTH – More improvements could be coming to a number of Yarmouth’s popular recreation areas.
A Cambridge-based engineering firm has drawn up preliminary plans for Flax Pond and Sandy Pond, including additions to Peter Homer Park.
Residents met last month at the police station to look at the plans and came to the conclusion that the Sandy Pond project would be the most beneficial.
Yarmouth Parks and Recreation Director Pat Armstrong said that the town wants to provide more recreational opportunities for not just the younger generation, but the older generation too.
“They’re active retirees and they want to be outside and they want to have good amenities and they want them available without to be nickled and dimed for them,” said Armstrong.
The price tag for that project would also be the costliest at $3 million, but would include 10 new tennis courts, one full and half basketball court and an artificial turf playing field.
Plans also call for a more centrally located restroom and concessions building, more parking spaces, as well as more picnic areas and a playground and splash park.
Funding for some of the project could come from the town’s Community Preservation Fund and may be included as an article in next spring’s Town Meeting warrant.
Armstrong said that the town’s finance and budget committees have laid out what they want to see in the project.
“They want to make sure that it’s not just youth programming and it’s not just sport, they want our parks to address all the generations to make sure that it’s not just the sports program but a place to walk and gather to socialize,” said Armstrong.
