YARMOUTH – Lots of fun is in store at the 37th annual Yarmouth Seaside Festival taking place this weekend.

Festival events kick off on Saturday at 11 a.m. with the third annual “Running of the Beds” race, followed by a pie eating contest and a “Kooks and Spooks” parade.

The Seaside Road Race takes place on Sunday at 9 a.m. and a fireworks display ends the day at 8 p.m.

Monday’s festivities include a sand sculpture contest and a canoe/kayak race at Bass River Beach.

“It’s a free event, there’s something for all ages,” said Festival Founder Jan Butler. “I think people enjoy the beautiful fall weather and it’s the first weekend that I think people are really starting to think ahead to Christmas.”

For the first time in 37 years, the traditional Seaside Festival parade won’t take place on Sunday.

The festival’s committee in August decided to cancel the parade due to tumbling revenues and rising expenses.

“It was a very, very tough decision for us to make,” said Butler. “We started a parade fund for 2016 just to make sure that financially we’ll be able to bring back that parade because so many people love it.”
