YARMOUTH – Talk about possibly moving Yarmouth Town Meetings from their current Saturday schedule to another day in the week was brought up at a recent selectmen’s meeting.
Attendance figures showed that when Town Meetings were held on Tuesdays from 2010 to 2014, attendance declined steadily.
In 2015 under the new schedule, over 670 residents were drawn to Town Meeting, but attendance slipped this year to around 250.
Town Clerk Phil Gaudet said that 2015’s attendance was due to the nature of the articles on the warrant.
“It was very much issue driven, it was guns and motorcycles so that drew out lots of people and it was a wonderful turnout,” said Gaudet.
Selectmen noted that two years is not enough to judge the schedule’s effectiveness.
Yarmouth resident Tom Nickinello thinks he may have the solution.
“If the same people keep on going to Town Meeting and you have the welcoming and you have the same old spiel all the time, I think we all know that, and if we can just get down to some of the meat and bones on what’s happening within the community, it might help,” said Nickinello.
