Yarmouth Hotel to Become Affordable Housing

YARMOUTH – The Yarmouth Gardens Motor Lodge is to be renovated into affordable housing for town residents.

“It served the town very well, the owners are ready to move on, and we couldn’t be happier to have this avenue for a really high quality redevelopment on Route 28,” said Mary Waygan, Affordable Housing Program Administrator.

This comes after Governor Charlie Baker announced the 2019 Affordable Rental Housing Awards that include state and federal Low Income Housing Tax Credits and state low-interest loans.

The proposed plan by the Commonwealth Community Developers would call for the complete demolition of the property as it stands, and would be replaced with 40 new apartments.

The complex would include 12 one-bedroom, 24 two-bedroom, and 4 three-bedroom units.

The estimated cost of the completed development is $15 million.

“Basically, you have to earn less than 60% of the area medium income, not own any property, and not have too many assets in the bank. So it’s basically low to moderate income households,” said Administrator Waygan.

“The Town of Yarmouth is really working hard to meet the needs of its residents. Whether it’s commercial property, or residential property, or recreational property, we’re so happy at the Department of Community Development and town wide to have this all interconnected effort on Route 28 and for the town,” she said.

Waygan said the tenants will be chosen by lottery and should be prepared for availability come 2020.
