Barnstable County Youth Commission Prepares For Annual Summit

WEST BARNSTABLE – The Fourth Annual Community Substance Abuse Prevention Forum will take place this evening at 5:30 in Cape Cod Community College’s Tilden Arts Center in West Barnstable.

It is being presented by the Barnstable Youth Commission.  A panel of Barnstable Police Officers will give this year’s presentation, which will include a discussion about, and demonstration of, team work making the community safer.

Before the program commences, non-profit organizations will share information regarding available programs which assist with community outreach.  These include Youth Street Reach, Big brother Big Sister and Barnstable County 4-H.

Barnstable Youth Commission Chairman Matt Hersey points out that they have a few openings.  “We’re an appointed commission allotted thirteen positions.  We currently have nine members, so that means we have four open slots for anyone above eighth grade in the Town of Barnstable.  We have eight members from Barnstable High School and one from Sturgis.”

The event is free and all are invited to attend.

On Friday, the 7th Grade Youth Summit will happen with a full day of activities designed to help students avoid becoming victims of substance abuse.  This will also take place at 4 C’s and is designed by the commission.

Commission member Michael Booth says they are part of a two way street.  “Last year we had the opportunity to go to the state house to meet with some officials.  It was a great opportunity to get our ideas happening throughout the state, and have people from the state tell us what we can do in our town.”

The non-profits that were at the forum will also be at the summit.
