ORLEANS – Nauset Sea Scout Ship and Explorer Club 72 will be holding an open house event next month for high school and middle school youth, parents and the public.

The event will be held on Sunday, May 1 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the clubhouse “landship” at 46 Beach Road in Orleans.

Several vessels will be available to board during the open house including two 26-foot Race Point surf rescue pulling boats, an 18-foot Herreshoff catboat, a 17-foot Aquasport center console power boat and a 23-foot O’Day sloop.

The event will also include hands-on activities like sail handling, navigating, knot tying, boating safety and oar handling.

Hot dogs and drinks will be provided free and the open house will take place rain or shine.

Memebers of both groups gain boating, water safety and life skills while exploring local marine resources and maritime career opportunities.

Scouts and explorers also visit various organizations and meet with craftsmen and experts to learn about the different maritime industries and careers on the Cape and include boatbuilding, rescue and survival, science and technology, fishing and maritime history.

Other programs include camping, seal watching, snorkeling and sailing tall ships.
