Yarmouth Deputy Police Chief Contemplates State Rep. Run

YARMOUTH – The deputy chief of police in Yarmouth may soon be seeking political office.

Steven Xiarhos, a resident of West Barnstable, said he is exploring a possible run for the 5th Barnstable District State Representative seat.

“It is something we are considering – strongly,” Xiarhos said.

He began thinking about the possible run in 2020 following the decision by Randy Hunt (R-Sandwich) to not seek reelection.

Hunt, who has represented the district for the last decade, announced in July that he would not run for reelection.

“He is a good person and has been a great state rep in my area,” Xiarhos said.

When Xiarhos heard the announcement it made him think that this could be the next step to continue to help people and serve the community and the Commonwealth.

Xiarhos has served with the Yarmouth Police Department for 40 years and is also a Gold Star father. His son Nicholas, a U.S. Marine, was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2009.

“I think with all the experiences, not only professionally as a police officer dealing with all kinds of issues that are important to people, but also on a personal level with the things we have been able to overcome as a family, there is a lot that we have done and a lot that we can do,” he said.

Xiarhos would not yet comment on any policy positions and said his full attention continues to be on his work with the YPD.

“Being able to serve as a police officer for over 40 years is so special and we are focused on that,” he said.

Xiarhos said a decision on whether to run in 2020 would probably be made sometime this winter.

“I just think it is a fantastic opportunity to serve – that’s what being an elected official is all about,” he said.

“When we make the decision we will let everybody know and we will be proud of it.”
