Zoning Changes, Fish Pier Purchase, Headline Chatham Town Meeting Article

KA_Chatham_Main Street Shopping Stores Shops Road22_112415CHATHAM – In an attempt to limit growth, a section of Chatham could be re-zoned if voters approve a plan at town meeting Monday night.

The proposal calls for the re-zoning of a section of Route 28 in West Chatham from a small business area to a residential area. The move would mark one of the more significant changes to the town’s zoning in recent years.

Other zoning changes would allow for the expansion of parking at the fish pier.

Voters will consider a $28.9 million dollar operating budget for the upcoming fiscal year. $10 million in capital and community preservation projects are on the table.

The big-ticket capital item is a $3.5 million proposal for a manganese and iron water treatment plant. The money would be added to the $6.5 million that voters approved for the project in 2014.

Residents will also consider purchasing the Eldridge Pier on Stage Harbor for town use. If approved, $1.5 million would be used from cash reserves for the purchase, which would also include some nearby land.

$525,000 in repairs to the municipal fish pier are on the table as well.

Residents are facing an $8.8 million budget for the Monomoy Regional School District, representing a 5 percent increase from the previous year.

Town meeting begins at 6 pm at the Monomoy Regional Middle School.
