The Falmouth Commodores will follow next in line as they host the Hyannis Harbor Hawks at Elmer “Guv” Fuller Field at 6:00 pm and the Cotuit Kettleers will open on the road at BFC Whitehouse Field in Harwich against the Harwich Mariners at 6:30 pm.

The defending Cape Cod Baseball League champions Y-D Red Sox will be on the road as well and will face the host Chatham Anglers at 7:00 pm at Veterans Field in downtown Chatham, while the Orleans Firebirds will host the defending West Division regular season champion Bourne Braves at 7:00 pm at Eldredge Park in downtown Orleans.

The buzz amongst Cape League fans will more than likely be focused upon the 2015 Major League Baseball First-year Player Draft which began yesterday (Monday, June 8) and featured the usual host of current and former Cape League players who were selected in the prestigious first round.

Illinois southpaw Tyler Jay – who helped last year’s Y-D Red Sox to the championship title – was selected in the first round yesterday with the sixth overall pick by the Minnesota Twins. Jay had a 1.92 earned run average, struck out four and walked one with one save last season for Y-D.

Switch-hitting University of Cincinnati outfielder and two-time Cape Cod Baseball League all-star Ian Happ was taken by the Chicago Cubs with the ninth overall pick in the first round yesterday. Happ played in 2013 and 2014 for the Harwich Mariners and last season was also named to the All-Cape League postseason team.

Currently on the Falmouth Commodores 2015 roster is the University of Arkansas’Andrew Benitendi, an outfielder selected with the 7th overall pick by none other than the beloved Boston Red Sox. It remains to be seen if Benitendi will arrive to Falmouth anytime soon as the Razorbacks captured a coveted spot in the College World Series Sunday by defeating Missouri State. A sophomore for the Hogs, Benitendi had a breakout season with 18 home runs, 54 RBI and batted .390.

The New York Yankees selected UCLA pitcher James Kaprelian with the 16th overall pick and Cape League fans are sure to remember him as he pitched for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox in 2013, piched in the Cape League All-Star Game at Merrill “Red” Wilson Field that summer and had an astounding 28 strikeouts in 20 innings pitched with just four walks, as well as a 1.80 ERA.

The first round of the draft continues today with nine regular selections left to be made, 10 first round compensation picks and six competitive balance picks.
