Blue Rock’s PGA Professional Patrick Fannon welcomed the golfers and highlighted the growing number of women golfers in the game, a demographic well-served by the friendly, welcoming atmosphere, beautiful flower-filled course and programs and leagues offered at Blue Rock. Assistant Pro Marybeth Winslow, who is also the head coach of the Girls Varsity Golf Team at Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School, introduced two top high school golfers who played along with the media, impressing everyone with their skills, shot accuracy and love for the game. As Winslow explained, “There has been a significant increase in the number of women and girls playing golf and that nationwide trend is evidenced by a shift in the number of golfers on the D-Y Girls Varsity Golf Team. In just one year, the D-Y team has increased from 7 players to 18 and a similar increase has been seen in high schools across the Cape. Some are beginners and others had originally played in clinics when they were young and are now returning to the game.”

A 2014 Women in Golf Study by Datatech concluded, “At a time when the golf industry is looking for ways to expand and grow, the results suggest the female golfer continues to offer great unrealized potential. The women’s golf market has long been underserved, in spite of the fact women are passionate about the game and have proven to spend considerably on apparel and shoes, while being underserved in equipment, particularly in golf clubs. Among the three biggest positive attributes for playing the game, 90% cited general well-being (outdoors, exercise), 80% cited the challenge and competition of golf, and nearly 70% cited the social interactions of playing the game with family and friends.”
