AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL: Sandwich Post 188 Runs Roughshod Over Hanover Post 149

HANOVER – Capecod.com Pitcher of the Year Joe Oriola picked right up where he left off a week ago, turning in five innings of shutout baseball for Sandwich Post 188 (10-2) over Hanover Post 149 (3-8) last night at Hanover High School in a 12-0, American Legion tilt.

Just over a week ago, Oriola helped lead the St. John Paul II Lions to their second straight MIAA Division 4 State Championship title and last night he turned in a solid mound performance for the District 10 East Division Post 188 boys for his first win of the summer.

Oriola struck out eight batters, walked two and allowed just one hit in his five-inning, 2015 Legion debut.

Post 188’s potent lineup – reminiscent of the Coach Bob Corradi state title years – gave Oriola just one run in the first inning and that was all he would need as the righty cruised through to the end of the mercy-rule shortened affair.

Northern University’s Luke Chevalier (3-4, 2 RBI, 3 runs) ripped a one-out double in the first inning and came home on Kevin Marsh’s two-out, RBI single for a quick, 1-0 lead. Post 188 added two more runs in the second and five in the fourth and four more in the fifth to notch its league-leading 10th win.

Post 188 leadoff man Brady Doherty went 2-3 – including a triple — and scored a pair of runs while catcher Gates Kelliher went 3-4 with one RBI.

Barnstable Post 206 Wins Sixth Straight in Battle over the Bridge with Wareham Post 220

WAREHAM – Drew Gallant went 2-4 with one RBI and used a little bit of old-fashioned hustle on a strikeout to spell the difference in a 6-5 win for Barnstable Post 206 against host Wareham Post 220. Post 206 is now 6-4 on the season.

Southpaw Jackson Badot was superlative in relief for the visiting Post 206 squad as he shut down the Wareham bats for his first-ever American Legion save on the mound. Badot threw 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief for Post 206, walked none and struck out one while allowing one hit.

Post 206 righty Daniel Crossen threw 2/3 of an inning of middle relief and both relief efforts gave Clark University’s Conor Walsh (3-1) his third win of the campaign. Walsh struck out four in 4 2/3 innings of work.

Gallant also scored two runs and was joined by Mike Knell who went 1-4 with a double and two runs scored. First baseman Eric Holzman, whose superlative defense throughout the entire affair held it together for Post 206, went 1-3 with one run scored.

With the tying run in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs, Holzman made an incredible, diving, one-handed catch over his shoulder as he crashed into the first-base line fence at Clement S. Spillane Field and ended the game with it.

Barnstable Post 206 is back in action Friday night at Hingham Post 120 in a make-up contest.
