Barboza KO’s Oltmanns in First Round, Pro Boxing Huge Hit in Hyannis (VIDEO/SLIDESHOW)

HYANNIS – It was what virtually everyone in the audience had come for.

Jesse “Bad News” Barboza – a 248-lb heavyweight contender born and bred in Hyannis – captured the Northeast Heavyweight Championship Crown Saturday night in front of about 1,000 screaming fans with a decimating knock-out victory over Bartonsville, Pennsylvania’s Jesse Oltmanns.

Barboza landed a flurry of bruising left and right punches and took Oltmanns down with a severe right blow just 1:12 into the first round of the feature fight of last night’s five-bout professional fight card put on by Boston Boxing Promotions.

The knock-out followed a mid-ring stare down before the opening bell between the two hulking heavyweights and it came just one night after Barboza (10-1-1, 6 KOs) and Oltmanns (10-7, 7 KOs)had scuffled on the scale at weigh-ins at Trader Ed’s in Hyannis.

Barboza’s 10th professional victory earned him his first title belt and it came after a win-by unanimous decision for Pembroke’s Vinnie Carita over Mexico’s Jose Humberto Corral in a cruiserweight bout that lasted eight exhausting rounds. The judges scored the Carita bout, 78-74.

Preceding Barboza and Carita’s victories, the crowd on hand went equally as wild for Harwich light heavyweight Paul Gonsalves who dusted Mexico’s Rafael Valenzuela in just 1:22 of the first round.

Gonsalves, now 8-7-1, took on Valenzuela and it did not seem expected that the wiry, lightning quick Harwich pugilist would uncork such an obliterating, machine-gun fire barrage of fists upon the experienced pro from our neighboring country.

But that’s just what Gonsalves did and the hometown crowd went wild with the victory.

Brockton middleweight Lionel Young took a win by technical knock-out in just his third career professional bout after the referee halted his fight in the third round versus New Jersey’s Tolan Tascoe. The two seemed to be alternating an equal amount of landed blows but it was Young’s pile-driving right that could be heard in the upper deck of the HYCC as he kept Tascoe staggering repeatedly.

New Jersey’s Malik Jackson, though, put on a formidable display of technique and skill in the gala event’s opening bout, as he knocked out Hartford, Connecticut’s Oscar Diaz in the third round and did so with an intensity that had the crowd on its feet (see video below).

In a bout that seemed fairly equal, Jackson sensed Diaz might have been off-kilter late into the third round when Diaz stood straight up along the ropes trying to regain his balance and that was all Jackson had been waiting for.

Unleashing a torrent of vicious blows to the head, Jackson sent Diaz crumbling to the mat and out of the ring onto the gymnasium floor. Diaz recuperated, however, with aid of quick medical attention and stood with Jackson at center ring for the winner’s announcement.
