Barnstable Boys Superlative over Nauset in Cross Country Opener

HYANNIS — Nauset Regional High School’s Brian Brooks came in first place Wednesday but it was not nearly enough as the host Barnstable High Red Raiders (1-0) took a commanding, season-opening win over the Warriors (0-1) in the first cross country dual meet of the fall, 21-40.

Nauset seniors Ryan Guiliano (co-captain), Andrew Gratton, Taigh Lawless, (co-captain) Jake Avery and co-captain Jack Norgeot gave it their best but Barnstable proved too much in both teams' season-opener Wednesday in Hyannis. Sean Walsh/Capecod.com Sports

Nauset’s Brooks “was impressive,” said Red Raider head coach Mike Merrill as the speedy Warrior turned in a solid time of 17:30 for the 5K course at Barnstable High School. According to longtime Barnstable girls cross country coach Keith Caldwell, long gone are the days of running cross country meets at historic Hathaways Pond off of Phinney’s Lane.

“We were there for over 30 years,” Caldwell said. “But it just became too much of a hassle, even though I still love that place.”

But the somewhat permanent change of venue for the host Red Raiders, in addition to the hazy, hot and humid weather yesterday, did little to hold Merrill’s boys from turning in a superlative opening performance.

Barnstable senior Ray Todoroff, senior Casey Connor, junior Cam Faszewski and junior Cam Donoghue (Junior) took the next four spots behind Brooks and the points just started adding up. Returning Barnstable harrier Jackson Burbic, a senior, also ran well and was closely followed by teammates Dan Loiselle (Junior), Tim DeCosta (Senior) and Sophomore Nick O’Toole who came in to round out the top 10.

Nauset’s Dylan McDonough was the next best time for the Warriors as he took 6th place with a time of 19:10.

Barnstable High is coming off a 9-2 season last fall. Nauset was 2-3 last season.
