HYANNIS – Communication is the key to any successful venture.
And that was the central reason why the Barnstable High boys’ volleyball team (3-2) made it a 3-0 blanking over the visiting Durfee High boys Friday night, much to the delight of first-year head coach Marylou Martin.
“The boys played smart,” Coach Martin said. “Communication was a big factor tonight. It was huge. They really talked to each other out there. It was exciting. Today was a good one, really good back and forth and Durfee was good.”
Barnstable won in three straight sets, 25-18, 25-23 and 25-21, but the second set was a tight battle that could have gone either way, according to Martin, with one key difference that fell in the host’s favor.
“The boys played hard and were able to executive our game plan,” Martin said.
Junior co-captain Scott Sawyer paved the way for the success of that game plan, as he accumulated 14 kills and added eight digs. Senior co-captain Donnie Mach was equally impressive with 12 kills and six digs. Harrison West-Mather poured out 22 assists and added eight digs and Matt Teague also threw in nine digs in what could only be deemed a solid, all-around effort.
The Red Raiders hit the road Monday for what promises to be another battle in the trenches when the Red & White face Brockton High.
“I think it will be a good battle,” Coach Martin said.
