Barnstable Red Raiders Make Quick Business of Lincoln-Sudbury Warrior Girls

HYANNIS – Senior captain Lindsey Phelan and junior forward Callie Rogorzenski each scored two goals last night to pace the #3-seeded Barnstable High girls hockey team to a 5-1 victory over the visiting Lincoln-Sudbury Warriors in first-round postseason action.

Barnstable High (16-1-4) eliminated the 14th-seeded Warriors (11-8-2) from the MIAA Division 1 Tournament with the win. The Red Raiders now advance to Wednesday’s Division 1 state quarterfinals in Woburn against the winner of tonight’s game between Acton-Boxborough and Chelmsford.

Acton-Boxborough has been Barnstable’s arch-nemesis the past two seasons, eliminating the Red & White from the postseason both years.

While Phelan and Rogorzenski both netted a pair, it was Barnstable sophomore forward Meghan Moore who drew first blood and it took just 12 seconds from the opening faceoff at the Lt. Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Memorial Skating Rink to get the job done. Moore’s goal was assisted by senior defenseman Morgan Richard.

From that point forward, Barnstable dominated virtually every aspect of the game.

Four minutes after Moore’s score, Rogorzenski scored her first of two goals on the night when she found the back of the net at 10:41 to make it 2-0, assisted by freshman Shannon Roycroft and sophomore Danielle Derosier.

The Red Raiders took a 2-0 lead into the second period and it took Phelan just 36 seconds to make it 3-0. Phelan took a feed from junior forward Caroline Spalt (also assisted by Moore) and things were all icing on the cake after that point.

Seven minutes later, Phelan made it 4-0 on an assist by Richard at the 7:31 mark. The period ended at 4-0, but the Red & White might have dropped its energy level down a hair in the third period when Warriors’ captain Marylou Cummings broke through a pair of Red Raiders at the Barnstable blue line and walked in on freshman goaltender Olivia Sollows to make it 4-1 (14:25). Sollows got caught up in the physical aftermath of Cummings’ goal and head coach Peter Nugnes opted to give his hard-working and gifted starting netminder a rest. Fellow frosh goalie Mikayla Bestford came in and got her first career taste of varsity postseason action and did a fine job.

Certainly, the fast-flying Rogorzenski helped in that cause just a tad when she re-upped the ante with her second goal and essentially withdrew the collective breath of the L-S girls.

Rogorzenski’s goal came unassisted with 2:20 remaining in the game.

Barnstable outshot the Warriors, 40-14.

Coach Nugnes credited senior forward Catie McShera with playing an excellent game.

“Catie really doesn’t get alot of credit and she played very well tonight, just as she has all season,” Nugnes said. “But overall it was a great, all-around team effort.”
