Barnstable Softball Girls Stage Comeback Thriller over Monomoy

HYANNIS – When it’s needed it most this season, the Barnstable softball team has found a way.

Down 3-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning against the visiting Monomoy Sharks, the Red Raiders found their way Friday afternoon at home when they staged a thrilling comeback rally that resulted in a 5-3 victory.

Shannon Kennedy-Cabral led off the sixth with a single, followed by singles from Ashlie Curtiss and Sara Higgins, with Higgins knocking in the game-tying run that made it 3-3 and then Jamie Corey drove in what would prove to be the game-winner when she reached on a fielder’s choice. Rachel Creswell added the insurance run with a sacrifice fly to drive in Corey.

Armed with a 5-3 lead, the first Monomoy hitter – Carlee Tolley — in the top of the seventh reached on an error but ended up going nowhere as Creswell and her fielders settled down to close it out.

Creswell went the distance on the mound for the win, allowing single runs in the first, fourth and fifth innings (two earned). She allowed six hits and walked two.

Monomoy’s ace hurler Abby Sullivan took the hard-luck loss. Sullivan struck out three but allowed 12 hits and five earned runs.

Curtiss was 2-3 with a triple and Kennedy-Cabral also went 2-3 with a triple while playing solidly in the field. Creswell helped her own cause with a 2-4 day at the plate and two RBI and Mia Crawley went 2-3 as well.

Emma Thacher went 2-4 for the Sharks and scored a run.

Barnstable is still alive in terms of postseason contention as it welcomes Dartmouth on Monday. The Red Raiders have four games remaining on the regular season and must win them all to make it.

Monomoy fell to 9-7 with the loss and needs just one more win to reach the postseason. The Sharks welcome St. John Paul II on Monday (May 18) for a 4:00 pm match-up at Stephen W. Potter Field in Harwich.
